　「日本人体解剖学 (上巻) 」には以下のような解説が見られる。

「会陰とは、狭義には肛門と外陰部（男では陰茎根、女では膣前庭）との間の小部分を指し、また広義には骨盤底の出口である骨盤出口の全体を言う。
会陰は、会陰筋およびこれをおおく筋膜からでき、その表層は皮膚におおわれ、皮下組織中には多量の脂肪を含んでいる。またこの部位の皮膚の正中線に一致して会陰縫線が認められ、男では陰嚢縫線に続いている。 」
