【概 要】
・緻密斑とは、遠位尿細管（太い上行脚の終わりの部分）の壁のうち、自分の腎小体の血管極で糸球体に接する所にある、細胞が密に並んだ部分である。
・この部分の上皮細胞は周囲より背が高く、核が目立って密集するため、標本では壁が濃く見える。これが緻密斑という名の由来である。
・緻密斑は輸入細動脈と輸出細動脈の間に位置し、輸入細動脈の壁にある傍糸球体細胞や糸球体外メサンギウム細胞と密に接している。
・緻密斑の細胞は、尿細管を流れる液の塩化ナトリウム（NaCl）濃度を感じとる。濃度が下がると、輸入細動脈が広がって糸球体の圧が上がり、傍糸球体細胞からのレニンの放出も増える。反対に濃度が上がると輸入細動脈が縮み、糸球体ろ過量が下がる。これを尿細管糸球体フィードバックという。
・緻密斑は、傍糸球体細胞や糸球体外メサンギウム細胞とともに傍糸球体装置をつくり、血圧と体液量の調節にかかわるレニン・アンジオテンシン・アルドステロン系の入り口にあたる。

In the kidney, the macula densa is an area of closely packed specialized cells lining the wall of the distal tubule where it touches the glomerulus. Specifically, the macula densa is found in the terminal portion of the distal straight tubule (thick ascending limb of the loop of Henle), after which the distal convoluted tubule begins.
The cells of the macula densa are sensitive to the concentration of sodium chloride in the thick ascending loop of henle. A decrease in sodium chloride concentration initiates a signal from the macula densa that has two effects: (1) it decreases resistance to blood flow in the afferent arterioles, which raises glomerular hydrostatic pressure and helps return the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) toward normal, and (2) it increases renin release from the juxtaglomerular cells of the afferent and efferent arterioles, which are the major storage sites for renin.
